In one of Amsterdam's picturesque canalside neighborhoods, a tiny French fry shop has unexpectedly become the epicenter of a bitter neighborhood war. Fabel Friet, located on Runstraat, turned into a viral sensation thanks to TikTok, drawing massive crowds eager to taste its signature fries topped with parmesan and truffle mayonnaise.

The Viral Tourism Backlash

While tourists line up across the historic bridges, local residents are facing a daily nightmare. Nineteen residents have filed a lawsuit to revoke the shop's business license, complaining about blocked sidewalks, discarded food, and an influx of seagulls and rats. Lawyers representing the neighbors argue that private businesses should not be allowed to effectively hijack public spaces in narrow residential streets that were never designed to handle viral tourist congestion.

The streets may add to the charm of Amsterdam, but they are simply not equipped to absorb such a massive volume of visitors drawn by social media algorithms.

Business Defense and Court Battle

Store owners Abel Klatsers and Floris Peilzer reject the accusations, noting that they operate a dedicated cleaning service four times a day and that visitor numbers have actually dropped compared to last year. Meanwhile, Amsterdam municipal authorities acknowledge the complex dilemma, balancing the economic benefits of tourism—which supports tens of thousands of local jobs—against the liveability of residential neighborhoods. The final decision now rests with the court.
