American nurse to young woman of Israeli descent: "I don't want anything from stinking Jews"
Maya, whose cousin was murdered at the Nova festival, posted items for free on Facebook Marketplace and was targeted by a California-based nurse with antisemitic abuse. "I couldn't believe it was real," she says.
Maya, a young American of Israeli descent who recently moved to Los Angeles, told mako Health that she was verbally attacked due to her Jewish identity after posting items for free on Facebook Marketplace. According to her, after coordinating with a man who expressed interest in one of the items, she received a message the next day from his wife, Rema Jayyusi, a nurse anesthetist at a California hospital, containing harsh antisemitic remarks.
"At first I spoke with her husband. He thanked me and said his wife would come to pick up the items. And then she wrote to me: 'I don't want anything free from stinking Jews.' I was in shock," recalls Maya. "I didn't write anywhere that I was Jewish or Israeli. I was just being nice and wanted to give something away for free."
According to Maya, the woman continued to curse and call Jews the most disgusting people in the world. Maya replied that her statements were shameful and that she did not intend to behave in a similar manner.
"I couldn't believe it was real. I wanted to answer her 'fuck you,' but in the end, I just wrote that she is disgusting and that I am not like her," she says.
Later, the woman even accused Jews of committing genocide in almost every place in the world. Maya believes that the woman entered her Facebook profile, saw posts she had uploaded in memory of her cousin, Eden Ben-Rubi, of blessed memory, who was murdered at the Nova festival at only 23 years old, and realized from that she was Jewish.
"I write quite a bit about Eden and what happened at Nova. I think that's how she got to it," Maya explains. According to her, this is not the first time she has encountered antisemitism in the United States: "Once at a party, they asked me where my parents were from. I said they were from Israel, and they spat on me. It's really annoying, but this time it was different. She just cursed at me. And she is a nurse in a hospital who is supposed to treat people. It doesn't make sense that she expresses herself this way. It was very insulting and shocking."
