AMD Acquires Fei-Fei Li's World Labs in 8.2 Billion Dollar Spatial AI Deal
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial AI startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in a stock deal valued at 8.2 billion dollars. Li will join AMD as senior vice president and chief scientist.

The artificial intelligence industry witnessed a major consolidation milestone as AMD announced the acquisition of World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup founded by pioneering researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately 8.2 billion dollars. Following the completion of the acquisition, Li is slated to join AMD as senior vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to Chair and CEO Lisa Su. This deal marks a significant convergence of advanced spatial AI development and high-performance hardware engineering.
From Immigrant Roots to Academic Pioniereering
Born in Chengdu, China, Li immigrated to the United States in 1992 at the age of fifteen, settling in New Jersey with her family. While pursuing her undergraduate studies in physics at Princeton University, which she completed in 1999, she famously balanced her coursework by working shifts at her family's dry-cleaning business. She later earned her doctorate in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Her academic journey ultimately led her to faculty positions, including serving as co-director of the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute and directing the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
In 2007, while working as a young faculty member at Princeton, Li conceptualized ImageNet, a massive repository of millions of annotated images designed to train computer vision systems. Despite initial skepticism from peers who questioned the scientific prestige of curating large datasets over algorithm tuning, Li persisted. The turning point arrived in 2012, when a deep learning breakthrough utilizing the ImageNet database dramatically outperformed traditional methods, cementing the dataset as a foundational milestone for modern machine learning and earning Li widespread recognition in the tech community.
Advancing Spatial AI and Hardware Integration
Founded in 2024, World Labs focuses on developing foundational models capable of generating and reasoning about 3D environments from text, images, and video prompts. Among its core offerings is Marble, which allows users to generate navigable 3D worlds, and Atlas, a recent model designed to predict and render novel views of scenes. These spatial intelligence systems require immense computational power, making the integration with AMD's graphics processing units a strategic imperative.
"Without a dedicated focus on hardware, artificial intelligence remains limited in efficiency and scalability—trapped within the digital realm rather than interacting with the physical world," Li noted regarding the acquisition.
By joining AMD, Li aims to bridge the gap between advanced spatial algorithms and underlying hardware infrastructure, pushing artificial intelligence toward a deeper understanding of three-dimensional physics and spatial dynamics.
