Ministry of Health issues urgent warning: serious risk of rabies infection near Givat Ze'ev
Following the detection of a rabid dog in Givat Ze'ev, the Ministry of Health is urging anyone who had contact with the animal between August 15 and August 26, 2026, to seek immediate medical advice.
The Ministry of Health has reported the detection of a dog infected with rabies on Hai Bar Street in Givat Ze'ev. Following the incident, one person exposed to the dog has been referred for preventive rabies vaccination.
The Ministry of Health requests that anyone who had contact with the dog, as well as owners of animals that may have interacted with it or with any stray animal in the area between August 15 and August 26, 2026, inclusive, urgently contact the Jerusalem Health Bureau at 02-5314820 or their nearest local health bureau. The purpose of the inquiry is to determine the necessity of preventive rabies treatment.
The Ministry emphasizes that after working hours and during weekends, individuals requiring examination due to potential exposure should go directly to a hospital emergency room.
Parents are urged to check with their children regarding any contact with animals in the area. Pet owners are advised to contact their municipal veterinarian to verify their animals' vaccination status. The Ministry also requests that this information be shared with travelers and vacationers in Givat Ze'ev and surrounding communities to raise awareness and prevent further exposures.
In the event of an animal bite or scratch, the area should be washed immediately with running water and soap, followed by disinfection with antiseptic materials. After these steps, one must contact the health bureau to assess the need for preventive treatment.
