Mahmoud Abbas Calls for 2027 Transition End at UN Side Event
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas addressed a UN General Assembly side event via video, calling for 2027 to mark the end of the Israeli occupation and the transition to statehood.
Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the Palestinian National Authority, addressed a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly via video link. The session was convened by the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. Abbas called for a strict timeframe to end the Israeli occupation, designating 2027 as the final year of the transitional phase. He asserted that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is essential for achieving regional and international stability.
During his address, Abbas expressed gratitude to a series of countries that have recently recognized a Palestinian state, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. He noted that these recognitions have brought the total number of supporting nations to 160, thereby strengthening international legitimacy for Palestinian demands to end the conflict and occupation. Abbas also announced that elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council are scheduled for November 28, 2026, followed by presidential elections in 2027.
Addressing the situation in the Gaza Strip, Abbas emphasized that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 outlines a clear pathway for ending hostilities and ensuring a complete Israeli withdrawal. He stressed the urgent need to commence reconstruction efforts immediately and to open a genuine political horizon. Furthermore, Abbas condemned the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, warning against the E1 settlement project, and accused Israel of withholding over 6 billion dollars in Palestinian tax revenues.
