The Race for the Terabit
While the 5G network is still slowly spreading in many parts of the world, communication giants and scientific laboratories are already in the midst of the next big race — the 6G network. If 5G promised us a stable connection for autonomous vehicles and smart cities, 6G sets a bar that sounds almost fictional: communication speeds that will allow downloading entire video libraries in a fraction of a second and almost zero response time.
According to industry estimates, the first commercial launch of 6G is expected to occur around 2030. But hidden beneath the spectacular performance are enormous physical and infrastructural challenges.
Speed vs. Reality
To understand the power of 6G, it is worth comparing the theoretical numbers with what we actually get in everyday life. A 5G network is theoretically capable of reaching a peak rate of about 10 to 20 gigabits per second (Gbps). In practice, on most consumer smartphones, the speed is only around 100-200 megabits per second (Mbps). The 6G network is expected to reach a theoretical peak speed of 1 terabit per second (1 Tbps) — that is, 1,000 gigabits per second.
