10 places in your home you forget to clean — and how to do it right

The house looks clean, the floor is shiny, and the kitchen is tidy, yet there is still an unclear smell in the air? It is possible that the source of the problem is precisely in the places we almost never think to clean. The house looks clean, the floor is shiny, and the kitchen is tidy, yet there is still an unclear smell in the air? It is possible that the source of the problem is precisely in the places we almost never think to clean. Appliances, the mattress, handles, and even the area above the cabinets can accumulate dirt for months.

Before you start, remember the golden rule of thorough cleaning: work from top to bottom. First, remove dust from lamps, shelves, and cabinets, and only at the end vacuum and mop the floor. This way, you won't have to clean the same area twice.

1. The washing machine rubber seal

If clothes come out of the machine with an unpleasant smell, the problem may not be the laundry detergent at all. Water, soap residue, fibers, and dirt accumulate in the door seal — a combination that can create an odor and even encourage mold buildup.

Go gently between the folds of the seal with a damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent, then dry thoroughly. It is recommended to leave the door open for a while after laundry and wipe the seal regularly.

2. The filter at the bottom of the dishwasher

When dishes come out cloudy or a bad smell rises from the dishwasher, the filter is one of the main suspects. Food scraps and grease get trapped in it and can impair the appliance's performance.

Disconnect the dishwasher, remove the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions, and wash it with warm water. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a soft brush — but avoid steel wool or metal brushes, which could damage the filter.

3. The top of the kitchen cabinets

This is where dust and grease meet to create a sticky layer. Start by vacuuming the dust and crumbs with a suitable nozzle, then go over it with a damp cloth and a material suitable for the cabinet type.

Do not pour cleaning material directly onto the surface, especially if it is wood. Try it first in a hidden area and dry immediately after cleaning.

4. The mattress under the sheet

Even if the bedding is changed regularly, the mattress itself accumulates dust, sweat, and skin cells. Remove the bedding and vacuum the surface, sides, and seams well using an upholstery nozzle.

For refreshing, you can sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda, wait about half an hour, and vacuum well. If there is a stain, use a very small amount of material suitable for mattresses and avoid deep wetting. Put the bedding back only after the mattress is completely dry.

5. The window tracks

Window tracks quickly become a small warehouse of dust, sand, and insects. Before wetting them, vacuum the dry dirt with a narrow nozzle. After that, go over the corners with an old toothbrush or a small brush, and wipe with a damp cloth. Order is important: if you wet the dust before vacuuming, you will get mud that is harder to remove.

6. Remotes, switches, and handles

These are the surfaces we touch the most — and sometimes clean the least. Wipe handles and switches with a slightly damp cloth, without introducing liquids into electrical openings. For a remote control, remove the batteries, turn it over, and shake gently. The spaces between the buttons can be cleaned with a soft brush or a swab.

7. The air conditioner filter

Dust that accumulates in the filter can reduce airflow and return particles to the room. Turn off the air conditioner, remove the filters, and clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the model allows washing, ensure it is completely dry before putting it back.

8. Refrigerator seals and sides

Small food stains and liquid residues accumulate quickly on the shelves and in the grooves of the seal. Empty one shelf at a time, wipe it and the sides with a soft cloth and a mild agent, and dry before returning the food. Go gently between the folds of the door seal; dirt there can interfere with the refrigerator closing properly.

9. Mold around the window or in the shower

Cleaning the stain alone will not solve the problem if the source of moisture remains. Check for leaks, constant condensation, or poor ventilation. On a hard surface, you can scrub the mold with water and a suitable cleaning agent. In porous materials, such as drywall or carpet, the mold can penetrate inside, requiring professional intervention.

10. The range hood and the area above the stove

The filter in the range hood accumulates layers of grease that can impair its efficiency. Remove it according to the manufacturer's instructions and check if it is intended for washing or replacement. Some filters can be soaked in warm water with a little dish soap. Do not return the filter before it is completely dry.

A dangerous cleaning mistake

Even if a video online promises a “stunning result,” you must not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, limescale removers, or other cleaning agents. Such mixing can release dangerous vapors. Use each material separately, read the label, wear gloves, and ventilate the room.

The most effective way to keep a house clean is not necessarily an exhausting day of cleaning. Choose two or three places from the list every week, dedicate a few minutes to them — and you will prevent the dirt from becoming a much bigger task.
