Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is calling on the US administration not to block Chinese artificial intelligence technology in an attempt to gain an advantage in the race to develop breakthrough innovations. In an interview published on Wednesday in the Financial Times, Zuckerberg warned that a US ban on Chinese AI models would not be an "effective solution."
According to Zuckerberg, American companies must "systematically identify" bottlenecks and obstacles in order to better compete with Chinese AI firms. His remarks come against the backdrop of a heated debate in Washington over how the US should regulate rapidly developing technology and respond to sophisticated Chinese competition.
Meanwhile, senior officials in the Donald Trump administration claimed there is evidence that the Chinese company Moonshot AI secretly used American competitors to train its latest model, Kimi K3. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned last week that "sanctions" could be considered if Chinese labs "cross the line into intellectual property theft."
These remarks follow the US government's announcement on Tuesday of a ban on the import of humanoid and four-legged robots from foreign manufacturers, claiming they pose "unacceptable risks" to national security. The ban also includes power converters used to connect renewable energy infrastructure and batteries to the power grid.
The new US restrictions, which do not apply to models already in use, represent Washington's latest attempt to strengthen and protect local industries and its supply chain, amid intensifying rivalry with China for control over advanced technology and artificial intelligence.
