A tragic mass stranding on a remote rocky beach in New Zealand has left 43 pilot whales dead, despite extensive rescue efforts by conservationists, local volunteers, and students.

The incident occurred on Thursday in the remote coastal area of Ngawi, situated at the southeastern tip of New Zealand's North Island. Rescue teams battled difficult terrain and heavy surf in a desperate bid to refloat the marine mammals, but all stranded whales ultimately perished.

The Department of Conservation received the initial alert shortly after 8:00 a.m. Rangers, local Maori community representatives, and volunteers from the rescue organization Project Jonah rushed to the scene to find dozens of whales trapped among sharp coastal rocks.

Project Jonah representatives noted that between 40 and 50 whales were scattered along several kilometers of coastline. Many were already deceased upon arrival, and the remaining live whales succumbed to their condition throughout the day.

Ariana Hauwira, acting operations manager for the Department of Conservation in the Wairarapa region, confirmed the final death toll of 43 whales on Friday. Authorities are currently coordinating with local Maori tribes to arrange a culturally respectful burial, as pilot whales are revered as sacred treasures in Maori culture.

Marine biologists identified the stranded animals as long-finned pilot whales, a species belonging to the oceanic dolphin family that can grow up to seven meters in length and weigh up to three tons. While mass strandings remain a documented phenomenon in New Zealand with over 5,000 recorded incidents since 1840, strandings in this specific rocky area are exceptionally rare.
