International Media Review: US Sanctions Spain and New York Drops Bonds
A review of international media coverage highlights US sanctions on Spanish shipping over Israel boycotts, New York City halting Israeli bond purchases, and stalled coalition talks in Berlin.

US Announces Sanctions on Spanish Shipping Over Israel Boycott
The US Federal Maritime Commission has announced a series of sanctions against vessels flying the Spanish flag, in response to Spanish ports refusing to allow American ships carrying military equipment to Israel to dock during the war in Gaza, according to Reuters.
The sanctions, which face a 60-day public comment period, include a $200,000 fee on Spanish ships docking at US ports and potential restrictions on Spanish exports such as olive oil and cosmetics. The investigation was initiated in 2024 under the administration of former US President Joe Biden and has now been finalized.
New York City Comptroller Drops Pledge on Israeli Bonds
New York City Comptroller Mark Levine has announced that the city will not purchase Israeli bonds as an investment vehicle for municipal funds, despite promising to do so during his election campaign, the New York Times reported.
Levine, a Hebrew-speaking Democrat who expressed deep ties to Israel, reversed his position due to perceived risks in the current geopolitical climate. While the city previously invested millions of dollars in Israeli bonds, the prior comptroller halted the practice amid the war in Gaza.
Berlin Coalition Talks Stalled Over Israel Policy
Nearly a month after elections in Berlin, coalition negotiations among center-left parties have stalled over the issue of Israel, Der Spiegel reported. The leftist Die Linke party emerged as the most popular faction, but faced accusations of catering to anti-Israel sentiments.
Potential coalition partners, including the Social Democrats and the Greens, demanded strict anti-Semitism safeguards and a firm commitment to Israel's right to exist. Talks collapsed after Die Linke refused to remove controversial representatives from its ranks.
