WhatsApp Web Upgrades: Now Supports Direct Calls from Browser

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in Israel and globally. Despite various shortcomings, most users rely on it daily. While the web version has historically lagged behind native applications, Meta is now releasing a significant update to close this gap, particularly regarding voice and video call management.

The most significant innovation is the ability to make and receive voice or video calls directly within WhatsApp Web. Previously, users had to download and install a native application to conduct calls from a computer; now, this can be done directly inside the browser. The updated interface includes tools familiar from the mobile version, such as real-time screen sharing, live reactions during calls, and quick access to call history and favorites.

Furthermore, the update addresses the issue of being tethered to a single device. Users can now transfer an active call between devices without disconnecting. For instance, a meeting started on a phone while commuting can be switched to a laptop as soon as the user reaches their desk.

For those conducting large group calls, WhatsApp has finally integrated a "waiting room" feature. When initiating a call via a link, the host can require new participants to wait for approval before joining.

Additionally, WhatsApp is integrating QuickHD technology, allowing for a smooth transition to HD video quality from the very first seconds of a call. A new background noise reduction tool has also been added, which can be managed directly through the settings screen.

Meta emphasizes that all calls made via the web version remain end-to-end encrypted, and the service remains free with no time limits or additional fees.

The update is being rolled out gradually and will reach all users in the coming weeks.
