Moderate Weight Loss in Fifties Can Protect Heart Health, Study Shows
A new British study reveals that a modest 5% weight loss in early fifties can significantly protect heart health and slow down cardiovascular deterioration.

A new study conducted by researchers from the United Kingdom reveals that a moderate weight loss of just 5% in early life can significantly slow down the deterioration of cardiovascular health. Tracking thousands of participants born in 1958, the research compared health indicators such as blood pressure, HDL cholesterol levels, and inflammation markers at ages 44 and 62.
Key Findings on Weight Management
The findings indicate that participants who shed more than 5% of their body weight in their early fifties experienced a rate of health decline comparable to individuals who maintained a stable, normal weight throughout their lives. For instance, for a person weighing 90 kilograms, losing 4 to 5 kilograms can provide substantial cardiovascular protection in the coming decades.
Conversely, weight gain during the same decade accelerated health deterioration. Approximately 37% of participants gained more than 5% of their weight during their fifties, while only 6% successfully lost weight and maintained the result. Experts caution against severe weight fluctuations, known as yo-yo dieting, which can negatively alter body composition by increasing fat and reducing muscle mass.
