The addictive scent that reading enthusiasts love to smell when they open an old book is not just a "dusty smell." This unique odor is created as a result of the slow chemical decomposition of organic compounds found in the paper, ink, and glue of the book over the years. This chemistry is not just a trivia detail for literature lovers, but an advanced scientific tool.

In 2009, a team of researchers from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, led by Prof. Matija Strlič, published a groundbreaking study in the scientific journal Analytical Chemistry. The researchers developed a method known as Degradomics (or "paper serology") — an analysis of the quantities and concentrations of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released from the book, without destroying or cutting even a single page from it.

Since the concentration of vanillin and furfural increases as the book ages and undergoes decomposition, scientists and museum conservators can now diagnose the exact age of a book, its internal state of decay, and the storage conditions required to save it — all through a controlled chemical "sniffing" of the air around the pages.

Acid hydrolysis: what is it?

Acid hydrolysis is a chemical reaction in which water molecules, combined with an acidic environment, break chemical bonds in long polymers. In the paper industry of the 19th and 20th centuries, aluminum sulfate was used in the production process. This substance made the paper very acidic, which caused a slow "self-destruction" of books from that period — a process that released huge amounts of odor, but also caused the pages to become brittle and crumble.

The chemical decomposition process of books does not produce "just a dusty smell" as many tend to think, but a complex mixture of odor molecules. The central compound released in the process is vanillin — the exact same molecule that gives the natural vanilla plant its familiar scent. This molecule, alongside other compounds, gives old books a rich aroma cloud that reminds one not only of vanilla and marzipan, but also of deep notes of roasted almonds, earth, tea, opened tobacco boxes, and leather bookmarks.

The history of paper explains exactly why books from different periods smell completely different. Before 1845, books were produced mainly from cotton and linen fibers. These contained a high percentage of cellulose and lacked lignin, and therefore remained stable, barely crumbled, and did not emit the familiar smell. The revolution occurred in the 1840s with the transition to paper made from cheap wood pulp — which flooded the books with lignin that oxidized, became acidic, and ate the pages.

Only around 1970 did the printing industry begin to transition to widespread use of acid-free paper, which dramatically slowed the rate of decay. However, chemists clarify that even without lignin, the cellulose itself decomposes slowly over hundreds of years and releases odor molecules.

The trap of modern paper

If you recently bought a new book in a modern bookstore, you surely noticed a completely different smell — sharp, chemical, clean, and sometimes almost devoid of aroma. Why does this happen? The answer lies in a dramatic change in paper production processes starting from the late 20th century:

  1. Removal of lignin: high-quality modern paper undergoes complex chemical bleaching and filtration processes (like the Kraft process) that remove almost all lignin from the wood fibers. Paper without lignin does not yellow over the years — but it is also unable to produce vanillin.

  2. Transition to acid-free paper: modern printing houses use neutral or slightly basic paper, which prevents acid hydrolysis and extends the life of the book by hundreds of years.

  3. Synthetic glues and inks: the scent of a new book is mainly due to industrial chemicals — solvents, polymer glues, and petroleum or soy-based inks.

However, there is one notable exception: cheap paperback books. To reduce production costs, paperback publishers still often use cheap paper containing high percentages of lignin and raw wood fibers. These paperbacks continue to age quickly, yellow — and emit that same beloved vanilla and marzipan aroma.

The smell of a new book stems from a chain of industrial chemicals used in the modern production process: sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) used to raise the pH and swell the fibers, hydrogen peroxide for bleaching, and water-repellent coating materials like Alkyl Ketene Dimer. These compounds, along with the solvents and glues, begin to decompose from the moment the book leaves the press — a chemical process that can be felt by the nose from the very first moment.

Beyond the original chemical composition, books function as an "aromatic sponge" that records the environment in which the reader resides — from humidity and cigarette smoke, to sunlight and journeys in moving boxes over the years. In historical and iconic libraries, such as the Wren Library at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, the accumulated scent of the books is now considered an integral part of the physical and cultural heritage of the place.

For reading enthusiasts, this smell is not just a chemical process but a whole atmosphere: a feeling of an "ancient forest" of ideas and floating particles, giving physical body to the words of writers — even years after they have passed away.

The words written on the pages tens or hundreds of years ago convey ideas, stories, and thoughts to us; but at the same time, the physical material itself — the paper, the lignin, and the glue — conducts a quiet chemical dialogue with our senses.

The sweet smell of vanilla, marzipan, and toasted bread emitted from the pages of an old book is living testimony to the time that has passed. It reminds us that every book is a living and breathing organism, undergoing constant change. Even if modern paper becomes cleaner, more durable, and more sterile, the familiar scent of old books will forever remain the aromatic memory of human print culture — the physical smell of history.
