Vincent Pastore, an actor renowned for his compelling mobster roles in film and television—most notably as Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero in the hit HBO series "The Sopranos"—has passed away at the age of 80. The veteran actor was found unresponsive at his home in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday after a neighbor, who had not heard from him for several days, contacted the authorities. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.
"He was a great guy, helped everyone, and was very generous," said his manager, Bob McGowan.
Born in the Bronx in July 1946, Pastore served in the Vietnam War before pursuing his passion for acting. Upon his discharge, he studied drama at university. His career began in the early 90s with supporting roles in films such as "Goodfellas" and "Carlito's Way." In 1996, he appeared in the HBO television movie "Gotti," working alongside future "Sopranos" co-stars Tony Sirico, Frank Vincent, and Dominic Chianese.
His major breakthrough arrived in 1999 with David Chase's acclaimed drama "The Sopranos." Pastore played "Big Pussy," a close confidant of Tony Soprano (portrayed by James Gandolfini) and a mobster turned FBI informant. The character's demise remains one of the most iconic and shocking moments in the Emmy-winning series. Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous films, including "Mickey Blue Eyes." His television credits include "Law & Order" and a guest appearance on "Yellowjackets." In the 2000s, he became a familiar face in reality television, notably participating in "Dancing with the Stars." He is survived by his daughter, Renee.
