Venezuela Opposition Leader Blocked from Returning as Trump Meets Interim President
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado failed in three separate attempts to return to her home country after traveling abroad to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump held his first meeting with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Machado's adviser, Pedro Urruchurtu, announced on social media that these latest failed attempts follow four previous efforts to re-enter Venezuela by land and air, as reported by the Spanish newspaper ABC. Machado left the country roughly nine months ago, defying a long-standing travel ban, in order to travel to Oslo and accept the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to her for fighting for democratic rights against the nation's dictatorship.
Historic US-Venezuela Meeting at the UN
Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump met with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, during the UN General Assembly. Rodríguez, who previously served as vice president under ousted leader Nicolás Maduro, held her first official meeting with Trump following Maduro's removal from power earlier this year by US forces.
"We discussed advancing bilateral relations and cooperation between our nations, marking a historic step forward," Rodríguez stated on her official Instagram account following the discussions.
Post-Earthquake Challenges and Diplomatic Shifts
Rodríguez expressed gratitude to the US administration for assisting Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes in June, which claimed hundreds of lives and caused over 37 billion dollars in damages according to UN estimates. Since taking the interim presidency, Rodríguez has pursued a moderately different diplomatic course, leading to the restoration of consular relations between Venezuela and Israel.
Machado, who won the opposition primary before being barred from running in the previous election cycle, remains determined to return. Following the summer earthquakes, she vowed to take any necessary steps to re-enter Venezuela and aid in national reconstruction.
