US Government Contractor Arrested for Leaking Classified Data to Journalist
A US government contractor with top-secret clearance has been arrested for allegedly leaking classified intelligence to his romantic partner, a Substack journalist.
The United States Department of Justice announced on Friday that a government contractor has been arrested on charges of leaking classified national security information to his romantic partner, a journalist who publishes a newsletter on Substack.
The suspect, 42-year-old Ian Brinksman, was arrested by the FBI following a search of his home in Washington and is charged with the unauthorized transmission of national defense information, according to federal officials.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg stated that Brinksman abused his top-secret security clearance to access sensitive intelligence and pass it to his partner, knowing she intended to publish it.
"This is not negligence. It is a betrayal of his oath and of the American public, which trusted him to perform his duties with integrity," Eisenberg said in a statement.
According to an FBI affidavit, Brinksman repeatedly accessed classified intelligence reports before communicating with the journalist. Investigators detailed phone records, database access logs, badge entry records, and email messages as evidence.
The journalist is not named in the court documents but is referred to as "Person 1." However, investigators cited excerpts from her publications that allegedly matched classified intelligence reports.
Authorities allege that at least five times during 2026, the journalist published Substack articles containing information matching classified documents, some bearing top-secret markings.
One excerpt cited in the affidavit is taken from a fundraising post published in September 2026, in which the author stated she had published investigations based on classified assessments from a U.S. government agency that the public deserved to know.
That quote matches a September 28 post in the online newsletter Capital & Empire, authored by journalist Aida Chavez. Chavez wrote that she had published investigations over the past year based on classified CIA assessments.
The FBI investigation relies on cross-referencing data from multiple sources, including database access logs and communications with the journalist. Investigators noted that articles containing classified information were published shortly after Brinksman accessed the relevant reports.
