Ben Shalom addressed the difficulties of finding a partner at a later age, the influence of social media, and the shift in trends among Jews in the Diaspora since the events of October 7. She emphasized the importance of making dating a central priority in life, similar to a career.
Ben Shalom addressed the question of why the current generation marries at a later age, noting:
"We are so obsessed with independence. We want to do our own thing, grow up, get a degree, find our place in the world, have a job, earn money."
According to her, "we are eager to earn money, but just not to the same extent when it comes to finding partners." She recommended that young people in their 30s "make dating your job," and focus on finding a spouse to the same extent that they focus on making a living.
A key point that Ben Shalom highlighted concerned the change among Jews in America. She noted that over the years, this number went down, but since October 7, we have seen a strong rise, with Jews in America feeling that they must marry someone Jewish. According to her, Jews in the Diaspora now understand that "if I don't have a Jewish partner, I can see now that it is really going to be a problem." She added that in Israel it is easier to find a match because it is "family-oriented" and has "tighter connections," unlike the great dispersion in the United States.
Regarding the work of matchmaking in the social media era, Ben Shalom explained that on one hand, "it might be easier to be a matchmaker because you have so many more resources." But on the other hand, "it is much harder, because people are very distracted." She emphasized her belief that "our soulmate is here too," and that she is not discouraged by her work, as she knows that matches exist and they just need to be found.
