A new study shows that the consumption of sugary drinks can increase the risk of stomach cancer. The research, published in the scientific journal Gastro Hep Advances, examined data from 112,000 women and men collected as part of two large American studies that spanned decades.

Every four years, participants reported their drinking habits. Researchers compared those who barely consumed sugary drinks (less than one serving a month) to those who drank at least one serving a day.

Among those who consumed sugary drinks regularly, a two-and-a-half times higher risk of developing stomach cancer was found. Professor Ayala Hubert, director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Unit at Hadassah, noted in an interview with the I24NEWS channel:

"When we talk about high consumption, it's about a can or more of a sugary drink. I want to emphasize, it's about something daily, constant, over long periods. As for drinking sugary drinks every now and then, that's fine."

Researchers and doctors emphasize that this is a statistical correlation, not proof that sugary drinks cause cancer. However, they note that high and prolonged sugar consumption may contribute to obesity, metabolic disorders, and high insulin levels, which may create conditions for tumor development.

As part of the study, researchers also examined diet drinks containing artificial sweeteners. Surprisingly, the authors did not find a significant link to stomach cancer.
