Suspect Impersonated Security Officer to Smuggle Illegal Aliens into Israel
A resident of Beit Hanina was arrested following a high-speed chase after breaking through a checkpoint. It was discovered that he had been impersonating a security officer to smuggle 21 illegal aliens into Israel by hiding them in a secret compartment within his vehicle.
An Israeli resident of Beit Hanina near Jerusalem, in his 30s, was arrested this week on suspicion of impersonating a member of the security forces and smuggling 21 illegal aliens from Judea and Samaria into Israel. According to the investigation, he would arrive at checkpoints wearing security forces uniforms, creating a false impression that he was on his way to urgent operational activity, which allowed him to bypass security checks.
During an operation on Tuesday, the suspect was arrested by Border Police (Magav) fighters of Judea and Samaria, with intelligence guidance from the Central Unit of the Central District Border Police. The forces identified the suspect as he arrived at the checkpoint in a white Savana-type commercial vehicle equipped with flashing signal devices. When signaled to stop, he broke through the barrier and attempted to flee. He was eventually apprehended, and a search of his vehicle revealed 21 illegal aliens concealed behind a double wall installed in the vehicle.
Last February, in an unusual security measure, police surrounded the Beit Hanina neighborhood in Jerusalem, adjacent to the Palestinian village of the same name. A week before Ramadan, concrete blocks were placed to block access routes in an area nicknamed "Dahiya" by the security establishment, similar to the Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut. This is due to the high population density on both sides of the separation fence.
The separation fence route has become a significant weak point in recent years. Despite the concrete wall and additional iron fencing, illegal aliens continue to use ladders and cutting equipment to penetrate the barrier. Furthermore, last February, Border Police fighters discovered a sewage tunnel used by Palestinians from Judea and Samaria to infiltrate Beit Hanina under the fence. The tunnel, located via intelligence information, was large enough for an average person to walk upright and was equipped with a folding ladder and iron rungs embedded in the concrete.
