The Los Angeles Lakers did not perform another roster overhaul this past summer. They made a strategic, almost fateful decision: to make Luka Doncic the exclusive face of the new project. This is a decision that is understandable from a professional standpoint, but one that comes with no small amount of risk.

Doncic is one of the most talented players in the world, perhaps one of the only ones in the league capable of changing the ceiling of an entire team on his own. When he is healthy, focused, and in full shape, he is not just a superstar, he is an offensive system in himself. The problem is that in the case of the Lakers, the entire new building rests almost entirely on this foundation.

The hamstring injury that sidelined him in the last playoffs is exactly the reason why this bet is so sensitive. Doncic sent a reassuring message to the fans and declared that he is completely healthy and ready for the upcoming season, but the Lakers know that statements in August are one thing, and the load of a full season in the West is something else entirely.

The moves the team made in the summer show how much they believe in him. Austin Reaves received a significant contract as a secondary creator, Walker Kessler arrived to give Doncic a clear target in the paint, and Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton were added to bring more pace, shooting, and ball handling. On paper, this is a roster that fits Luka's style much better.

But this is exactly where the weak point lies. The Lakers didn't just adapt to Doncic, they almost eliminated their margin for error. If he is fit, this is a team that can become one of the most dangerous in the West. If he struggles to stay on the court again, this whole move could collapse very quickly.

JJ Redick's plans also add another layer of interest. Lineups with three guards could make the Lakers a fast, creative, and hard-to-stop team, but they could also overload Doncic defensively. A player of his size and weight, who is required to both run the offense and deal with more physical players on the other side, might pay for it over time.

And yet, it is hard to ignore the message Doncic is sending. The team trip he funded to Slovenia, the joint training sessions, and the attempt to build a connection in the locker room show that he understands the magnitude of the responsibility. The Lakers are no longer looking for just his talent; they need leadership, stability, and above all, availability from him.

Ultimately, this is the season that will define the Lakers' new direction. There is no lack of talent there, no lack of prestige, and no lack of expectations. But after all the changes, all the signings, and all the talk, the question remains very simple: will Luka Doncic manage to stay healthy?

If the answer is positive, the Lakers could gain a new era. If not, the big bet of the summer could very quickly turn into an expensive mistake.
