A drama in the global biomedical industry with an intriguing Israeli angle at its center: the American drug development company BioXcel Therapeutics, which based its strategy on using artificial intelligence (AI) to develop neurological treatments, has filed for bankruptcy in a Delaware court. At the same time, the company is advancing a process to sell its assets, with Teva serving as the 'stalking horse' — meaning it is submitting the base bid for the auction, which guarantees it a significant advantage and keeps the door open for competing offers.

'After a comprehensive review of strategic alternatives, we believe that this option provides a clear framework for advancing a transaction that will maximize value,' said BioXcel CEO Vimal Mehta.

The collapse occurs at a critical point in time for the company, which is currently awaiting FDA approval (target date November 2026) for expanding the use of its flagship drug, IGALMI. The drug, which treats acute agitation in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, is a candidate for home use that would replace the need for medical supervision.

To maintain ongoing operations until the sale is completed, BioXcel has secured debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing of 19 million dollars from its existing lenders. The money will be used to pay salaries, supply the drug to patients, and continue advancing medical approvals. Now, all eyes are on the court and the acquisition auction, which could be a particularly significant strategic step for Teva.
