Umm al-Fahm Resident Shot Dead by Border Police Following Dramatic Chase
A mentally ill resident of Umm al-Fahm was shot dead by Border Police after escaping custody, crashing his car, and allegedly attacking officers during a dramatic pursuit.
A resident of Umm al-Fahm, who his family says suffered from mental illness, was shot and killed by Border Police officers during a police chase and subsequent car accident. The deceased, Alaa Mahameid, had previously been hospitalized at the Shaar Menashe Mental Health Center. According to suspicions, he managed to get into his car and escape after already being detained and handcuffed. Border Police and regular police forces pursued him, and according to suspicions, after being detained a second time, he attacked the officers. They opened fire, and a medical team pronounced him dead.
Police stated that motorcycle unit officers from the Border Police tactical brigade were operating in the Umm al-Fahm area when they spotted a suspicious vehicle on Route 65. According to the police, the driver ignored orders to stop and fled from the forces. "During the arrest, the suspect behaved in a manner that raised the officers' suspicion while still in his vehicle," police added. "When one of the officers approached the vehicle, the suspect got out, lunged at the officer, and began attacking him. The officer, feeling his life was in danger, fired at the suspect and hit him."
