Five suspects were arrested just 320 meters from the perimeter fence, carrying vans loaded with explosives. While US President Donald Trump claimed that Washington and London had been tracking the suspects for an extended period, British media reports indicate that local police had no prior intelligence and acted solely on the quick-thinking alert provided by a civilian.
The incident unfolded late at night near the village of Welford, when a local farmer returning from a social gathering noticed three suspicious commercial vans blocking a quiet country lane surrounding the base. She observed several men wearing balaclavas and hoodies dispersing toward the trees and fields heading in the direction of the military facility. Realizing the gravity of the situation, she immediately dialed 999 and alerted neighbors via a local WhatsApp group, prompting a rapid police response that led to the arrests within minutes.
Potential Iranian Connection Under Investigation
British security services are actively investigating whether Iran orchestrated the foiled plot. The base has previously been used by US strategic bombers for operations, leading to explicit threats from Tehran over the summer warning that any facility utilized for strikes against Iranian territory would become a legitimate target. In July, British authorities also faced an unprecedented cyberattack that crippled a power station for days, further heightening tensions.
"We knew the air base faced a real threat of a terrorist attack even before last night. Therefore, as soon as I saw them, I was concerned. You cannot see masked people running around at 1:30 in the morning in a rural area near a secure air base and not be alarmed," the farmer told the Daily Telegraph.
Heightened Security Measures
Following the arrests, RAF Fairford was reportedly placed under "Delta" alert, the highest threat level designated by the US Department of Defense, while neighboring installations like RAF Lakenheath were raised to "Charlie" status. The base has seen significantly increased security since the onset of the US-led operations in the region earlier this year, including road closures and enhanced perimeter screening to protect incoming military assets.
