What was supposed to be a well-deserved post-reserve duty trip turned into a prolonged nightmare abroad for Yonatan Levi, an Israeli reservist who was arrested on September 15 at the airport in Dharamshala, northern India, after a stray bullet was found in his backpack.
Arrest and Detention
During routine security checks at the local airport, security personnel discovered a single rifle bullet inside his personal backpack. The bullet was accidentally forgotten in the bag following extensive military service, and Levi was completely unaware of its presence. Despite his explanations to the authorities, he was arrested on the spot and transferred for interrogation at a local police station.
Upon receiving the report in Israel, his family launched a race against time. The family immediately contacted official authorities in Israel and quickly engaged a local lawyer, accompanied closely by Israeli Foreign Ministry officials. However, the first court hearing did not bring the anticipated release: the police investigation was extended, and Levi was transferred to a local prison in Dharamshala.
"With a heavy heart we turn to you," the family stated. "Yonatan gave his all for the country in recent years. Every contribution and every share will help us continue the legal battle, bear the heavy costs, and bring him home safely."
Bail and Ongoing Legal Struggle
Following three days of police detention and six particularly difficult days behind bars, the joint efforts of the family and their lawyer led to a first breakthrough: on Wednesday, September 23, Levi was released on bail. Despite his release from prison, he is not yet fully free. The criminal investigation against him continues, his passport and mobile phone are held by local authorities, and a sweeping travel ban prevents him from leaving India.
The central effort of the legal team is now focused on closing the case without an indictment—the only step that will allow him to retrieve his passport and return home. The ongoing legal battle in a foreign country entails massive financial costs, prompting the family to appeal to the public for financial assistance.
