Two Arrested After Breach at US-Operated RAF Molesworth Base in Britain
British police arrested two Latvian nationals for breaking into the US-operated RAF Molesworth base. Authorities stated there is currently no link to a recently foiled Iran-backed terror plot at RAF Fairford.
British police announced Thursday the arrest of two Latvian nationals suspected of breaking into the Royal Air Force Molesworth base, a facility operated by the United States. While the motives remain unclear, authorities stressed there is currently no evidence linking the incident to a recently foiled terrorist plot at another British base, Fairford, allegedly orchestrated by Iran.
Security Breach at US-Operated Facility
RAF Molesworth, located roughly 110 kilometers north of London, houses intelligence personnel from the US Africa Command and NATO's Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre. According to British law enforcement, the two suspects, aged 32 and 36, were apprehended inside the base perimeter at approximately 2:00 AM following the discovery of an abandoned vehicle and a breached fence during routine patrols.
The suspects were initially detained on suspicion of trespassing and criminal damage, but charges were later upgraded to entering a prohibited area for a purpose prejudicial to the safety of the United Kingdom. The Counter Terrorism Policing unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
Heightened Tensions in the UK
The incident unfolds amid maximum security alerts in Britain following the thwarted attack last week on RAF Fairford, a strategic hub for US Air Force operations in Europe. US military authorities hurriedly evacuated B-1 bombers from Fairford earlier this week over intelligence regarding potential drone strikes by Tehran.
"Our investigation into this incident is at a very early stage. A central part of it is to examine every possible motive for why the men were in the area, but it is important to emphasize that at this stage we are keeping an open mind," stated Commander Helen Flanagan, head of the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command.
