United States President Donald Trump announced during his address to the United Nations General Assembly that the United States is officially changing the terminology for artificial intelligence to "super intelligence," using the abbreviation SI. Trump argued that the word "artificial" makes the technology sound fake, noting that official American documents will now reflect the new term.
"The United States completely rejects any attempt to build a globalist plan for controlling artificial intelligence that everyone is talking about so much now," Trump said. "From now on, it will be officially called 'super intelligence,' because using the word 'artificial' makes it sound fake. It makes it sound fake, and it's not fake. It's actually amazing. But we have to be careful."
Trump added that he hopes the rest of the world will also adopt the shift, stating that US documents and potentially global standards will transition to the more precise term. He noted that whoever wins the race in super intelligence will win overall, emphasizing that the US currently maintains a significant lead over China and other global competitors.
While the administration plans to monitor the sector closely through the Department of Justice and enforcement agencies rather than stifling its growth, tech experts expressed skepticism. Simon Coghlan, a lecturer in digital ethics at the University of Melbourne, told the BBC that the term "SI" is unlikely to catch on across the technology industry because it exaggerates current capabilities and borrows prestige from a concept usually reserved for hypothetical future systems that surpass human intelligence entirely.
