Tragedy in cycling race: former Israel-Premier Tech rider killed at age 19
British rider Finlay Tarling, who previously rode for the Israeli team that was forced to change its name and move to Switzerland, was hit by a car driving in the opposite direction of traffic and entered the course during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal.
Tragedy at the Volta a Portugal cycling race: British rider Finlay Tarling, who previously rode for the Israeli team Israel-Premier Tech, was killed on Friday in a serious accident during the eighth stage of the race. Tarling, only 19 years old, was involved in an accident during the stage between Melgaço and Fafe. Following the incident, the race was stopped. The podium ceremony planned for the finish was canceled as a mark of respect for the young rider.
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. Initial reports in Portugal claimed that Tarling was hit by a car driving in the opposite direction, outside the race convoy. However, the official statement from the organizers was limited at this stage to defining the event as a "serious accident."
NSN paid tribute to Tarling:
"It is with a broken heart that we announce the death of our team rider Finlay Tarling today during the Volta a Portugal race. Finn was a very beloved member of the team, but most importantly, he was a son, brother, and friend to so many. We will miss him dearly. We send our deepest condolences to Finn's parents, Michael and Dawn, to his brother Josh, and to everyone who was lucky enough to call Finn a friend. Rest in peace, Finn."
"The organization of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express deep sorrow over the death of the British rider Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident during the eighth stage," the official statement from the race said. "We send our deepest condolences to his family, his teammates, the NSN Development Team, and all his friends and loved ones."
Tarling was particularly well-known to Israeli cycling fans after joining Israel-Premier Tech in 2025. Ahead of the 2026 season, the team was forced to change its name and move to Switzerland following protests and harassment by pro-Palestinian activists, becoming the NSN Development Team, and Tarling remained with them for another season. In the team, he was defined as a time-trial specialist.
The young Welsh rider, born on October 2, 2006, was the younger brother of Joshua Tarling, a rider for the INEOS Grenadiers team. Despite his young age, Finlay had already begun to establish himself at the continental level and showed several promising results this season. Among other things, he finished second in the sixth stage of the Tour of Rwanda, and at the British Championships, he finished third in the under-23 time trial. In the Volta a Portugal itself, he also showed his abilities, finishing 11th in the opening prologue in Lisbon and continuing with his team for the first seven stages.
The eighth stage, which was supposed to cover 166.8 kilometers from Melgaço to Fafe, took a tragic turn following the accident. The race was neutralized until the finish, and the celebrations planned in Fafe were canceled. Tarling was in his second season at the continental level, and his career was just beginning to gain momentum. Now, the British cycling world and the teams he rode for are forced to say goodbye to one of their young talents, who was tragically killed at only 19 years old.
