Dramatic turn in the Eldar Dayan case: Friends suspected of murder
Developments in the investigation into the disappearance of Eldar Dayan after a fight at Yarkon Park. The police suspect that his friends know where he is and are attributing a series of serious offenses to them.
Since July 17, Eldar Dayan, 23, from Dimona, has been missing. Initially, the police considered him a missing person following testimony from his friend that they were involved in a fight with Eritreans at Yarkon Park on Friday. Afterward, they fled to a gas station, and his tracks have been lost since then.
The abandoned vehicle of one of the friends was located in Petah Tikva with a shattered window, no license plate, and bloodstains. Eldar himself was seen in an unclear physical state at a convenience store in Petah Tikva on the same day. The police's main line of investigation is that he was involved in a hit-and-run accident, following which he went underground and fled. His friends who are in custody are maintaining their silence, even though they are suspected of obstructing the investigation after their versions were contradicted, and the police estimate that they know where he is.
Omri Peretz and Maxim Bruverman are the two friends who provided conflicting versions regarding his disappearance. Now they are suspected of the murder of their friend Eldar, and the police requested to extend their detention by a week.
The police are investigating a hit-and-run incident involving 5 young people from the fight and are attributing a series of serious offenses to the two friends who were arrested: hit-and-run and assault causing bodily harm, threats of murder against their missing friend, endangering human life on a transport route, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit a crime, and reckless driving.
Judge Gil Gabay determined that there is reasonable suspicion and extended the detention of the two suspects by 4 days. The suspects' lawyers deny the allegations against them and claim that their clients are not involved in the hit-and-run and do not know where Dayan is. They further argued that the claim of murder threats is puzzling, since the threats attributed to them were directed at the missing Dayan, and therefore it is unclear from whom the complaint was received at all.
According to the lawyers, the police are using the suspects as hostages to exert pressure until the discovery of the missing person clears the fog surrounding the case.
