Dangerous TikTok Fire Ext extinguisher Trend Sparks Health and Safety Alarms

A dangerous new trend sweeping TikTok shows children and teenagers discharging fire extinguishers, spraying the chemical substance on people and property, and filming the acts for social media clout. Beyond the vandalism and the depletion of emergency equipment in public buildings, health experts warn that exposure to the chemicals can cause severe eye and respiratory irritation, and in prolonged cases, life-threatening conditions.

Health Hazards and Medical Warnings

Dr. Danny Raviv, head of community emergency medicine at the Clalit Zevulun Medical Center, warned that exposure to fire extinguisher contents can severely damage mucous membranes and the respiratory tract.

"The dangers of exposure to these substances are first and foremost irritation of the mucous membranes: eyes, respiratory tract, coughing, and tearing. In more severe cases with prolonged exposure, the danger can even be life-threatening—seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and respiratory arrest," Dr. Raviv explained.

The Viral Risk and Copycat Behavior

The most alarming aspect of such trends is what remains outside the frame of the viral video. While clips rack up thousands of views and likes, they fail to show whether victims required medical treatment, property damage occurred, or if missing extinguishers were desperately needed during an actual emergency. This disconnect is especially hazardous for young viewers, as seconds-long clips easily spark copycat behavior and put innocent bystanders at risk.
