October proved to be a challenging month for insurance stocks on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, with the TA-Insurance index dropping by 9.69%. Seven out of the eight stocks in the index finished the month in negative territory, while IDI Insurance, widely known as Bituach Yashir, emerged as the only bright spot with a modest gain of 2.34%.

The downturn was primarily concentrated in the final trading days of the month, driven by broader weakness in the equity market and underlying political uncertainty. Despite this correction, October's losses failed to erase the sector's robust performance earlier in the year, leaving the TA-Insurance index up 32.3% since the beginning of 2026.

Sector Performance Breakdown

IDI Insurance led the sector as the sole gainer, supported by its direct-to-consumer business model operating without insurance agents. The company also boasts a 10.23% increase since the start of the year. Among the major insurance groups, Phoenix Holdings posted the mildest retreat, losing 6.85% in October while maintaining a 32.02% year-to-date gain, closely mirroring the broader index.

Menora Mivtachim Holdings saw its shares fall by 7.68% during the month, bringing its year-to-date return to 27.56% and placing it slightly behind its major competitors. Clal Insurance dropped 9.58%, aligning closely with the sectoral average, though it retains a strong 33.45% return since January, marking the third-highest yield in the index.

Laggards and Annual Standouts

Harel Insurance & Finance lost 10.51% in October, yet it remains one of the sector's top performers with a stellar 51.26% surge year-to-date, the second-highest in the index. Meanwhile, Migdal Insurance fell 13.9%, Ayalon Insurance dropped 16.26%, and Wesure Globaltech slumped 17.65% to become the index's weakest performer. Because Wesure controls Ayalon, both stocks sustained concurrent pressure.

Despite its sharp October correction, Ayalon stands out as the annual leader, skyrocketing by 94.21% since the beginning of the year. While October served as a painful correction for the Israeli insurance sector, analysts note it followed nine consecutive months of sharp gains.
