After conquering global music charts and massive stadiums worldwide, Taylor Swift has achieved a remarkable feat in scientific taxonomy. Entomology researchers from the United States have described a new group of insects from Australia, naming the genus and its species after the pop superstar and her iconic works.

The new genus has been named Swiftiephylus, combining the fan community name with standard scientific nomenclature. Even the physical appearance of the insects, featuring light-yellow bodies with reddish hues, closely mirrors the singer's signature look. The study, published in the scientific journal Insect Systematics & Evolution, was led by Sarah Schroeder, an entomology PhD student at the University of California, Riverside, alongside her advisor, Prof. Christiane Weirauch.

Discovery of New Species

The researchers described a total of 12 new species from the family Miridae—the largest family of true bugs in the world—with four belonging to the new tribute genus. The species have been named Swiftiephylus taylorae (after Swift herself), Swiftiephylus amator (inspired by the album Lover), Swiftiephylus intrepidus (named after Fearless), and Swiftiephylus poetorum (inspired by The Tortured Poets Department).

"The most recognized look of Taylor Swift is blonde hair and red lips, and these insects are pale yellow with touches of red throughout—in the paper, I actually refer to them as blondes," Schroeder shared.

Decades of Museum Research

Behind the discovery lies decades of meticulous laboratory work. The specimens were originally collected in Australia between 1995 and 2004 as part of a large-scale biological survey encompassing over 50,000 findings. They were subsequently stored in the drawers of the American Museum of Natural History and the Australian Museum until Weirauch and Schroeder isolated 593 specimens, compared them, and classified them into distinct evolutionary groups.
