Former t.A.T.u. Members Reunite on Stage in Mexico Over Two Decades Later
Former t.A.T.u. members Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina reunited in Mexico for a live performance, sparking intense online debate over Volkova's appearance and the duo's enduring legacy.

Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina, former members of the iconic Russian pop duo t.A.T.u., recently reunited on stage in Mexico to perform their global smash hit "All The Things She Said". While fans welcomed the musical nostalgia, much of the online discussion quickly shifted to Volkova's drastically altered appearance. At 41, Volkova looked strikingly different from the schoolgirl who rose to fame in 2002, displaying fuller lips, prominent cheekbones, a narrower nose, and a sharpened chin, alongside numerous tattoos. Social media users flooded posts with comments criticizing both her cosmetic procedures and the performance itself, with some accusing the duo of lip-syncing.
The group was originally formed in Moscow in 1999 by producer Ivan Shapovalov, achieving international stardom in 2002 when the English version of their single topped charts in the United Kingdom and Australia. At just 17, Volkova and Katina famously portrayed a rebellious lesbian schoolgirl couple in the controversial music video, kissing in the rain. Although the duo later admitted that their romantic relationship was a marketing stunt engineered by Shapovalov to spark global controversy, the image cemented their legendary status in pop history.
Over the years, the two singers have taken starkly divergent paths in both their personal lives and public stances. In 2014, Volkova sparked widespread backlash following homophobic remarks during a television interview regarding gay men, while expressing a contrasting view on lesbians. Volkova is a mother of two and attempted a political career in 2021 as a candidate for the ruling United Russia party, though she was unsuccessful in the parliamentary elections.
In contrast, Lena Katina focused on her solo music career, releasing three studio albums and achieving success on US charts. Katina has also publicly expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community, advocating for personal freedom and acceptance. Despite a tumultuous history marked by professional splits and public feuds, Volkova and Katina have reconciled and continue to tour together, receiving a renewed wave of global interest after Kelly Clarkson performed their signature hit on her talk show.
