Taiwan Deports Chinese Student Over Presidential Optical Illusion Video
A Chinese exchange student in Taiwan was deported and banned for five years after posting a video mocking President Lai Ching-te alongside pro-unification messages.

A Chinese exchange student at the National Taiwan University has been deported and banned from returning for five years after posting a video mocking Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.
The incident took place on October 12 during an academic program's graduation ceremony. The student, identified by his surname Wang, sat in the audience and used his smartphone to create an optical illusion, positioning his fingers to make it appear as though he was pinching the president's head.
Wang uploaded the clip to Douyin, China's equivalent of TikTok, accompanied by a caption promoting the unification of Taiwan with China and opposing the island's independence.
Deportation and Public Backlash
The post triggered widespread outrage in Taiwan amid ongoing cross-strait tensions. Although Wang quickly deleted the video and issued an apology, Taiwan's National Immigration Agency announced on October 16 that his entry permit had been revoked.
Authorities emphasized that the deportation was driven by the combination of the optical illusion and the provocative political messaging rather than the gesture alone, noting it violated the mutual respect required of visitors from China.
The decision sparked a debate within Taiwan regarding freedom of expression. Opposition lawmaker Lin Pei-xiang questioned whether the punishment infringed upon free speech, while authorities maintained that foreign visitors must adhere to local entry conditions.
