Sylvester Stallone Opens Up About the Dark Side of His Action Star Physique
Sylvester Stallone revealed the severe physical and psychological toll of maintaining his iconic action-hero physique, admitting to eating disorders and steroid use.

Sylvester Stallone reflected on his decades-long physical transformation and the severe toll of Hollywood stardom in a recent interview with The New York Times, promoting his autobiographical book "The Steps." The 80-year-old actor discussed how iconic roles like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo required extreme physical discipline that eventually morphed into a dangerous obsession.
The Obsession with Physical Perfection
Stallone explained that his muscular physique served as armor during his career, evolving from a lean look for Rocky into a more feral, athletic build for Rambo. "I started thinking: design your body like a jaguar, a cat. Not big like Arnold Schwarzenegger," he shared. However, this pursuit reached dangerous extremes, particularly during the filming of "Rocky 3," when his body fat dropped to an astonishing 2.6 percent. He admitted that the pressure led to severe eating disorders and an unhealthy worship of his own physical form.
The physical toll extended far beyond strict dieting, with Stallone openly discussing his use of performance-enhancing drugs. "Nobody does it without supplements and drugs, period," he stated, noting that maintaining such fitness while subsisting on meager rations was impossible without chemical assistance. This relentless drive ultimately resulted in massive physical damage, including nine back surgeries, two shoulder operations, and three neck procedures. Looking back, Stallone expressed regret over performing his own stunts and constantly pushing his body to the breaking point.
