Early Seasonal Surge of Sore Throats and Viral Infections Reported in Israel
Health experts in Israel report an early seasonal rise in viral and bacterial sore throats, linked to the return to schools. Doctors recommend early flu vaccination and proper treatment.

Rising Cases of Sore Throats and Seasonal Illnesses
Even before the official arrival of winter, an increase in bacterial and viral sore throats has been observed across various health maintenance organizations in Israel. According to Dr. Uri Nitzan, a family medicine specialist at Clalit Health Services in the Haifa and Western Galilee district, this rise is closely linked to children returning to schools and kindergartens.
"We see this a lot: a mother comes with her child to the pediatrician, and then visits me with the exact same issue," Dr. Nitzan noted.
Viral Infections, Allergies, and Symptoms
Physicians report a surge in clinic visits for sore throats and flu-like symptoms. Dr. Ilan Yehoshua, a family medicine specialist at Maccabi Healthcare Services in the southern district, explains that the morbidity includes viral infections such as coronavirus, alongside seasonal transition phenomena like sneezing, itching, and worsening asthma.
Dr. Danit Blumenthal, a senior physician at Clalit's child health center in the Sharon-Shomron district, emphasizes that while most cases are viral and resolve on their own, bacterial infections like streptococcus require specific medical attention.
Treatment Recommendations and Prevention
Doctors advise staying home when feeling unwell and wearing masks in offices if attendance is necessary. Furthermore, medical professionals strongly recommend getting the influenza vaccine ahead of the peak season to avoid severe complications and family-wide illness outbreaks.
