Poll: About 70% fear election disruption — and how many support involvement in an attack on Iran?

The Israel Democracy Institute published on Tuesday the results of a new poll conducted as part of the «Israeli Voice» index for July. The study, led by the Viterbi Center for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy under Professor Tamar Hermann, Dr. Lior Yochanni, and Yiron Kaplan, presents an up-to-date picture of the Israeli public's positions on key political, security, and social issues.

The campaign against Iran

In the overall sample, the most common view (37%) is that Israel should avoid military involvement in an American attack on Iran and respond only if attacked directly. 20% support persuading the United States to carry out a joint military move. 18% believe Israel should join an American attack only if requested, and 16% think Israel should strike even without coordination with the United States.

Breakdowns by political camp among Jews show clear differences: the majority in the left (about 60%) support avoiding involvement unless Israel is attacked. The center also leans toward coordination with the U.S. In contrast, the right shows significant support for proactive Israeli action, whether by persuading the U.S. to act jointly or by striking independently.

The territories: likelihood of uprising and attitude toward violence

A large majority (72%) assess that there is a high likelihood of a Palestinian popular uprising (intifada) in Judea and Samaria in the foreseeable future. This is a significant increase from November 2025, when the figure was 59%. The gap between demographics is evident: about 80% of Jews expect an uprising, compared to less than 40% of Arabs.

The Center also tracks public opinion on how security forces handle settlers who act violently against Palestinians. Among Jews, 46% believe security forces are too soft on them. In the left and center camps, this view is held by 86.5% and 63% respectively. In the right camp, 37% believe the approach toward violent settlers is too harsh.

Ahead of the elections: primaries and procedure integrity

A majority (56%) view primaries as the most suitable method for determining party lists. 11% support the party leader deciding, and 15% prefer a steering committee. Furthermore, 72% of Jews and 58.5% of Arabs express concern regarding potential threats to the integrity of the elections. The left camp perceives this danger most acutely (90.5%), followed by the center (76%) and the right (66%).

The July 2026 «Israeli Voice» index is based on a survey of 751 respondents (600 in Hebrew, 151 in Arabic) conducted between July 28 and August 2, 2026. The maximum sampling error is 3.58% at a 95% confidence level. Fieldwork was carried out by the ShiluvI²R Institute.
