The Solana network has performed a significant upgrade to its mainnet, in which the time allocated for each "slot" was shortened from 400 to 350 milliseconds. A slot is a short period of time in which a specific validator takes responsibility for adding a new block of transactions to the network.

In simple terms, Solana is trying to make the network process transactions faster. The upgrade, which was carried out last Friday, is the first step in a broader plan aimed at eventually reaching just 200 milliseconds. This is a reduction of half the slot time that had been in use for years.

The move comes at a time when network activity is on an upward trend, as the number of transactions unrelated to the operation of the network itself has grown since the beginning of the year. For the average user, the significance of the change is not necessarily dramatic in every transaction, but in a network that performs millions of operations, even a reduction of a fraction of a second can be significant.

However, it is important to clarify that the upgrade does not automatically increase the number of transactions that Solana is capable of processing per second. The main goal at the current stage is to reduce waiting time, not to increase the total amount of work the network can perform.

The developers' next target is 300 milliseconds, followed by additional stages of 50 milliseconds until the final target of 200 milliseconds is reached. The transition between stages is not automatic: Solana teams plan to monitor network performance and ensure that validators are able to keep up with the new pace. If a significant portion of them has difficulty producing blocks on time, the process can be halted.

The significance for the crypto market could be particularly interesting if activity continues to strengthen in the coming months. A faster network could make transactions, applications, and services based on Solana more convenient for users, but speed alone does not guarantee an increase in the price of the SOL coin or the success of the network.

Ultimately, the real test will be in actual usage: whether more users and businesses will choose Solana as activity grows. If the upgrades succeed without compromising network stability, Solana may reach the coming period ready to handle significantly higher loads.
