A new scientific study published in a cardiology journal highlights a health risk that many are unaware of: sleeping with a light on in the room, even at very low intensity. What seems like harmless ambient lighting, light from a smartphone screen, or a sliver of light under the door can affect the heart and increase the risk of future heart problems.

Findings on Heart Muscle and Sleep

The study examined the sleep habits of over 11,000 participants, discovering that exposure to light during sleep, even at relatively low levels, is linked to the thickening of the heart muscle walls. Such thickening can impair the heart's ability to contract and relax properly, serving as a warning sign for heart function decline and an increased risk of heart failure.

Researchers note that this does not necessarily mean a large lamp illuminating the entire room. Even small light sources we barely notice can be significant:

  • Smartphone screens on the nightstand

  • Digital alarm clocks

  • Street lighting entering through the window

Biological Impact and Recommendations

According to the study, part of the impact on the heart may be related to light shortening sleep duration and degrading its quality. Additionally, researchers point to biological changes occurring overnight, including elevated stress levels, blood pressure fluctuations, and altered heart rates.

Experts emphasize that further research is required to definitively establish a causal link between sleeping with light and heart disease. Nevertheless, several simple steps can be taken tonight to reduce light exposure and improve sleep conditions, such as choosing warm, reddish nightlights if illumination is strictly necessary.
