A blow for Jannik Sinner just before the US Open: the world number 1 announced today, Tuesday, that he will miss the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, after failing to recover from a right knee injury. The 24-year-old Italian, who has not played since his victory at Wimbledon last month, still hopes to be fit for the final Grand Slam of the year, which will kick off on August 30.
"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I must announce that I am forced to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," said the 24-year-old tennis player. "My right knee is bothering me, and although we worked hard with my medical team, I must accept the fact that I am not yet ready to compete."
"I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in Cincinnati," concluded Sinner. "I can't wait to return next year, and now I am focusing on preparations for the US Open."
The Cincinnati tournament will kick off on August 13, and the final will be held ten days later. Among the participants will be Alexander Zverev (world number 3) and Novak Djokovic (5). The world number 2, Carlos Alcaraz, won the tournament in 2025 and led 5:0 in the final against Sinner, before the Italian was forced to retire, but the 23-year-old Spaniard will also miss this year and will not be able to defend his title, having not played since the Barcelona tournament in April due to a wrist injury.
