Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will see his annual salary rise to 3.6 million Singapore dollars as part of a 60% ministerial pay hike, pledging to donate the increase.
Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to receive a significant salary increase of approximately one million dollars as part of a one-off and substantial pay rise for the country's government ministers. Following the adjustment, Wong's annual salary will rise from 2.2 million Singapore dollars to 3.6 million Singapore dollars, equivalent to approximately 2.8 million US dollars.
The salary adjustments will add more than 60% to the compensation of government ministers, whose pay is already considered among the highest in the world. Singapore has long justified the high remuneration levels for its political leadership by arguing that they help attract top-tier talent to leadership roles and ensure clean and effective governance. However, the issue of ministerial pay remains politically sensitive, as their earnings far exceed those of the vast majority of citizens.
Prime Minister Pledge and Independent Review
Wong announced that he will donate the entirety of his salary increase during his term in office to "suitable good causes."
"Political salaries are a difficult and emotive issue," Wong said. "The sums involved are higher than what most citizens earn, and therefore I understand why Singaporeans scrutinize them closely and why many feel strongly about the matter."
According to Wong, the central question is whether Singapore will continue to secure the quality of political leadership needed to advance the nation in the coming decades, emphasizing that good governance depends on good leadership.
Historical Context and Global Comparisons
Singapore carried out its previous ministerial salary adjustment 15 years ago. The country is consistently ranked among the nations with the lowest levels of corruption in the world.
Wong stated that the pay raises were recommended by an independent committee. However, current officials will not immediately transition to the new pay scales. Ministers will receive a one-off adjustment of up to 9% starting October 15, depending on individual circumstances and performance.
Even after the salary increase, the Prime Minister of Singapore's salary remains significantly higher than that of leaders in other major nations. The President of the United States earns 400,000 dollars annually, while the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom receives approximately 230,000 dollars a year.
