Jannik Sinner, the world number one, has withdrawn from the Cincinnati tournament due to a right knee injury, less than a month before the start of the US Open.
"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I must announce that I am forced to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. My right knee is bothering me, and although we worked hard with the medical staff, I must accept the fact that I am not yet ready to compete. I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in Cincinnati. I am already looking forward to returning next year, and now I am focusing on preparations for the US Open."
The withdrawal from Cincinnati follows Sinner's decision to skip the tournament in Canada. He has not played since his second consecutive victory at Wimbledon on July 12, when he defeated Sascha Zverev in the final in four sets.
Despite concerns regarding his fitness for the US Open, the "Gazzetta dello Sport" reported that the decision to skip Cincinnati was taken as a precautionary measure and that Sinner is expected to train in New York ahead of the last Grand Slam of the year.
The US Open will begin on August 30. For Sinner, who won the tournament in 2024, this is one of the main goals for the remainder of the season.
Cincinnati, for its part, will have to manage without the top two ranked players in the world. Carlos Alcaraz also withdrew from the tournament due to an ongoing wrist injury, so the two biggest stars of the tour will not play in the main preparatory tournament ahead of the US Open.
