Without food and water: two fishermen survived 5 days inside a cooler in the Pacific

Two Mexican fishermen were found alive on Wednesday in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after surviving for five days inside a cooler without food or water. Daniel Guerrero Martinez and Jose Luis Portales Villegas were rescued in a state of severe dehydration about 240 kilometers off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico.

The two men set out to sea on their boat, the "Camaronera," from the fishing town of Paredon last Thursday, but lost contact with the shore the following day after their vessel sank. Following reports of their disappearance, an extensive search operation was launched, involving boats, aircraft, and eventually the Mexican Navy, in an effort to locate them.

The Mexican Navy praised the rescue efforts, which included the deployment of naval and aerial units, enabling the fishermen to be found and returned to their families. Martinez and Villegas were transported by helicopter to a hospital for urgent medical treatment. An investigation has been opened into the circumstances of the sinking, with initial assessments pointing to stormy weather and strong winds as the cause of the incident.
