Will he succeed against all odds? Phil Collins' son signed with 1860 Munich

A particularly well-known name has joined the squad of 1860 Munich. The German club announced the signing of Matthew Collins, son of the legendary British musician Phil Collins, to a one-season contract — until the summer of 2027.

The 21-year-old Collins, a midfielder holding a Swiss passport and British citizenship, trained with the team for several weeks during trials before managing to convince the club's staff to offer him a contract. In his youth, he passed through the youth academy of Hannover 96 and also played for the Austrian club Tirol. Last season, he belonged to Austria Salzburg from the second division in Austria, but received only a few minutes of play. He recorded four league appearances, in which he played a total of 33 minutes, and added one appearance in the cup.

Collins arrives at 1860 Munich during a particularly turbulent period. The historic club dropped out of the third league for economic reasons, parted ways with long-time investor Hasan Ismaik, and was forced to rebuild itself in the Bavarian regional league, the fourth in the hierarchy of German leagues.

Besides his famous father, Matthew is also the half-brother of model and actress Lily Collins, known primarily for her lead role in the series "Emily in Paris". 75-year-old Phil Collins, lead singer and drummer of the band Genesis and the man responsible for hits like "In the Air Tonight" and "Another Day in Paradise", is dealing with nerve damage following a spinal injury, walking difficulties, and knee problems for which he underwent five surgeries. In his final performances, he sang while seated, while his son Nic replaced him on the drums. Last May, he said that his condition had improved, but admitted that he does not see himself returning to perform on stage.
