Escalation in Ukrainian Regions
Overnight between Sunday and Monday, Russian drones attacked the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, residential buildings, a university, and a shopping center were hit, leaving five people injured. He stated that Russia simultaneously attacked nine other regions across the country.
In the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, a Russian drone struck a residential building. A 45-year-old woman was killed and her 13-year-old son was seriously injured, according to Ukrainian emergency services.
"Russia has lost control over some of its diesel production capacity following Ukrainian strikes on refineries," said US President Donald Trump.
Drone Interceptions and US Reactions
The strikes followed an unprecedented Ukrainian drone offensive that lasted from Saturday through Sunday. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, air defense systems intercepted 244 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and the Black Sea overnight. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian Air Force announced it had intercepted or jammed 148 Russian drones launched at Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump addressed the campaign, stating that Russia has lost control of some of its diesel production capacity due to Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries. Earlier this month, Trump called on Zelensky to halt attacks on Russian refineries, arguing they contribute to a global diesel shortage and price hikes. Zelensky responded that Ukraine has offered various diplomatic proposals to end the war, but clarified that a halt to Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy and export infrastructure would lead to reciprocal de-escalation steps by Kyiv.
