The government of British Columbia has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging negligence in failing to prevent a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge. The legal action follows revelations that the company did not alert authorities despite suspect conversations between the shooter and ChatGPT.
Lawsuit Details and Allegations
On February 10, an 18-year-old individual shot and killed several people in British Columbia before taking their own life. Reports later indicated that months prior to the tragedy, OpenAI identified the suspect as a potential threat based on violent scenarios discussed with ChatGPT. Internal discussions reportedly took place among company employees, with some urging management to contact Canadian law enforcement. However, no report was made.
"No company should be granted immunity from responsibility simply because its technology is new," stated British Columbia Attorney General Niki Sharma during a press conference.
Government Response and Demands
The province is seeking damages to cover the costs of rebuilding the local school infrastructure, as well as expenses related to emergency responders, educators, and mental health support services. In response, OpenAI expressed condolences to the victims and their families, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to safety and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
