Watch the reception that stunned Mohamed Salah: "I have never seen anything like this"
25,000 people welcomed the Egyptian star, who is set to officially sign with Trabzonspor soon: "There are no words to describe how happy I am." And why did he choose the number 61 shirt?

After long months of rumors, conflicting reports, and negotiations, most of which were unsuccessful, Mohamed Salah agreed this evening (Wednesday) to his terms for two years at a new and surprising destination: Trabzonspor. The Egyptian national team star was on the verge of an agreement with Beşiktaş, but the deal collapsed, and the Turkish rival took advantage of the situation to swoop in for the glittering reinforcement.
According to reports, Salah will receive a huge base salary of 17 million euros per season (an all-time record in Turkey; the previous one was 15 million euros received by Victor Osimhen), along with bonuses that could reach an additional five million euros each season. If he meets the conditions to receive all the grants, the value of the two-year contract could reach 44 million euros.
In addition, it was reported that the striker will receive between 20 and 25 percent of the revenue from the sale of shirts bearing his name. Considering this clause as well, the total package could be worth about 50 million euros over the duration of the contract. Salah arrives, of course, on a free transfer, after finishing his contract with Liverpool.
The star was welcomed by about 25,000 people and was moved:
"I am happy to be in this amazing atmosphere. I don't remember seeing anything like this before, and I have no words to describe how happy I am. There are 25,000 people here, it's unbelievable. I have never seen anything like this. I succeeded everywhere I played, and I want to succeed with Trabzonspor as well — in the league and in the European arena."
Trabzonspor President, Ertuğrul Doğan, thanked the fans for the historic reception they gave Salah:
"Mohamed Salah is a global star, and we thank the fans who came here. Our fans showed everyone how to welcome a star of this magnitude."
Salah landed this morning in Turkey and already posed in his new team's uniform with the number 61. The choice is not accidental: it is a number associated with the Trabzon province and is considered a local symbol of the city and the club. Salah wore the number 11 shirt for nine seasons at Liverpool, but at Trabzonspor, this number belongs to Ozan Tufan. The number 10, which he wears for the Egyptian national team, is occupied by Ernest Muçi.
The 34-year-old Salah announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of March, and in the two months remaining until the end of the season, he added two more goals. He parted ways with the club with 257 goals in 441 matches and winning eight titles in his nine years in red. Under his leadership, Liverpool won two championships (2022 and 2025) and the Champions League (2019), while he was chosen twice as the Premier League Player of the Season and finished four times as the league's top scorer.
Trabzonspor finished third last year, but now anything other than an eighth championship ever and the first since 2021/22 will be considered a disappointment for the club.
