Watch: Lionel Messi's first public appearance since the World Cup final
The Argentina national team captain was spotted for the first time since the loss to Spain while attending a match of Leones, the club presided over by his brother. Despite his attempt to keep a low profile, he was quickly recognized by fans.
Lionel Messi made his first public appearance overnight (Saturday to Sunday) since the Argentina national team's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. The Argentine captain arrived to watch a match featuring Leones, the family club presided over by his older brother, Matias, against Central Cordoba in the 21st round of Argentina's fourth division.
Messi arrived at the Antonio Di Giacomo stadium in Arroyo Seco after the opening whistle, wearing a black hoodie in an attempt to keep a low profile. Despite this, he was quickly identified by fans and television cameras, which captured him watching the game from a box behind one of the goals.
The Inter Miami star responded with a smile and a wave to the cheers of fans and children calling his name, receiving warm applause. On the pitch, however, he had little reason to celebrate: Leones lost 2-0 following goals from Marcos Cordoba and Franco Fernandez.
The appearance came less than a week after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final. While several national team players and coach Lionel Scaloni returned to Buenos Aires to be greeted by thousands of fans, Messi flew directly to Rosario to spend his vacation with his family in nearby Funes.
At this stage, it remains unclear when Messi will return to Inter Miami. The American club has yet to announce a return date, and his coach, Guillermo Hoyos, recently stated that "there is no return date."
