AZ Alkmaar opened the season with an impressive statement of intent, thrashing PSV Eindhoven 0:4 this evening, Sunday, at the Philips Stadion to win the Johan Cruyff Shield for the second time in its history. The cup holder took full advantage of Joey Veerman's early red card on the way to a one-sided victory over the champion.

The event that changed the game came as early as the ninth minute. Veerman hit Max Meerdink in the face while attempting to reach the ball, and following a VAR review, he was sent off with a red card. PSV was forced to play with ten men for almost the entire match, and AZ Alkmaar knew how to capitalize on it.

It was Meerdink, who was injured in the incident, who scored with a header in the 25th minute to send AZ Alkmaar into the break with a 1:0 lead. PSV tried to get back into the game before halftime, but Guus Til and Dennis Man failed to find the net.

In the 51st minute came the moment for Wesley Fatachi, the former Maccabi Tel Aviv player. The Brazilian curled a wonderful ball into the top corner to make it 0:2. Elijah Dijkstra added the third in the 59th minute, and Ro-Zangelo Daal sealed the result with a penalty in the 66th minute, after Calvin Stengs was fouled in the box.

AZ Alkmaar was also close to a fifth goal, but settled for 0:4 and its second title in the competition. On the other hand, PSV's defense looked vulnerable again, and the champion will need to learn lessons quickly.
