Iran had planned to strike in Ukraine following an attack on an Iranian cargo ship in the Caspian Sea over the weekend. According to Iranian and Western sources, diplomatic efforts have succeeded for now in preventing escalation, as reported by the New York Times.
Ukraine confirmed on Saturday that it had attacked an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, resulting in the death of one civilian sailor and injuries to three others. Intelligence sources suggest that Iran considered launching a ballistic missile with a small warhead to convey a symbolic message, or targeting a Ukrainian port on the Black Sea. A direct Iranian attack on Ukrainian soil could have triggered a widespread escalation, increasing the risk of a broader confrontation given the alliance between Iran and Russia.
Diplomatic Efforts and Reactions
Parallel to military preparations, diplomatic activity was initiated to defuse the crisis. Following a phone call with Andrii Sybiha—who was visiting Washington alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky—Araghchi stated that Ukraine described the strike as an "unintentional action." Iran has demanded compensation for the loss of life and damages.
For his part, Sybiha emphasized the need to avoid steps that could lead to escalation and urged an end to support for Russia's war against Ukraine. "This is an illegal war, and it must end," he wrote.

In Iran, a sharp debate has developed. Some political figures call for a military response, while others warn that opening a new front would cause more harm than benefit. Analysts point out that Ukraine possesses significant war experience and enjoys logistical support from the US and Europe, meaning Iran would gain nothing from opening another front.
Meanwhile, hardline media outlets like Raja News have harshly criticized Foreign Minister Araghchi, accusing him of downplaying the incident and calling his acceptance of Kyiv's explanation an "insult to the intelligence of the Iranian people." Simultaneously, the Kremlin spokesperson attempted to fan the flames, suggesting that Iran should view the attack as a direct strike on Iranian soil.
