Daniel Theis is leaning towards signing with Maccabi Tel Aviv, it was reported today (Saturday) on BasketNews. According to Donatas Urbonas, negotiations between the parties are at an advanced stage, and the German center prefers the option of joining the 'yellows' at this stage, despite interest from several other teams.
As published on Walla Sport, Maccabi Tel Aviv has increased pressure in recent days to sign Theis following financial problems at ASVEL. The 'yellows' are willing to take on his contract from the French club in a deal estimated at approximately $2.5 million for the upcoming season, and are offering him the starting center position.
Theis was supposed to join ASVEL, and Tony Parker even confirmed his arrival in an interview at the end of June, but his signing was not officially announced. On July 16, it was reported in L'Équipe that the French club might operate in the 2026/27 season with a significantly lower budget than planned, and as a result, top players who had agreed to terms with the team began looking for other options. Sylvain Francisco has already joined Panathinaikos, and now Theis may also choose another destination.
As we reported, Maccabi Tel Aviv is in contact with ASVEL and the player's representative. The 34-year-old Theis returned to Europe a year and a half ago after seven years in the NBA and played for Monaco. In the 2025/26 season, he averaged 9.7 points and 5 rebounds in 38 EuroLeague games. In the 2024/25 season, he appeared in 15 games in the competition, scoring 11.7 points and grabbing 5.5 rebounds on average, on the way to the EuroLeague final with the team from the principality.
In the NBA, Theis played 411 games and averaged 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds. His best season was 2019/20 in Boston, when he averaged 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
